BMX New Rider.
So you have never raced before and you say, what do I need to get started. The best thing to do is come out and watch a race before actually trying it out, this way you will get a real good idea as to what you need and what will work.
What makes BMX different from other sports? Unlike conventional sports like soccer, baseball, or hockey, practices and races are determined by the rider. You do not have to go to practice and you can race once or 100's of times in a year. This is the beauty of this sport, you can work it around all other schedules. And if you travel, chances are there will be an ABA track close by so check out the aba website before you go on vacation and see if there is a race close by when you get there.
On race day:
1. You need a bike. For the younger kids a 20 inch wheel bike or smaller is required and all reflectors and kickstands must be removed. Most other classes race a 20 inch wheel as well but there are classes for bigger 24 inch wheels also. As well you will need three pads on your bike. A handle bar crossbar pad, and stem pad and a top tube pad. Your local bike shop can assist you in purchasing these or ask someone at the track. Bikes with suspension and gears are not recommended for this sport as they slow you down and are usually heavy and harder to get around the track.
2. Protective gear. You must have helmet, full face is recommended. A long sleeved shirt and long pants. When first starting out, it is not necessary to purchase race pants or race shirts, but as you get into it you will see the benefits of using these.
You will need the three bike pads located below and all your reflectors and kickstands and chain guards removed then your bike is ready to race.
